Myths and Truths About College Classes in High School

"Colleges do not offer their "running start" courses on-line to prepare you for their college or save you money -- they offer them to get you to enroll in their college..."

There is a growing trend in homeschooling to take college courses in high school. These courses are being offered to homeschoolers as a way to "start college early," save on college tuition, be more prepared for college, and other purported benefits. However, as the wave of students from these courses are graduating college, it is apparent that the hype and the reality are not the same thing.
A Soup of Sports

This week I really could not find something substantive to write about. Nothing seemed to pop into my mind that I could elaborate into a full column. So instead of just making some boring stuff repeat itself over the course of five hundred words, I thought I’d just make a collage of my opinions of different issues in the sports world at this time.

Dwight Howard:
If anyone/organization needs a lesson in press management, it is the Orlando Magic and Dwight Howard. For months we have been put under the annoying spray of outrageous press coming out of Orlando. First we hear Howard is itching for a trade to the Nets and it is imminent. Next comes the “I just want to stay home.” Soon after that came the release that the Magic

The C in CAN SLIM

Ever heard of the acronym CAN SLIM? CAN SLIM is the system tested real-time by the American Association of Individual Investors between 1998 and 2009, which returned an average of 35.3% a year for a grand total of a 2,763% return.

The first letter is C. We return to Kindergarten. What does C stand for?

If you said Cat you failed.

Guess we have to back Junior Kindergarten.

C stands for “CURRENT BIG OR ACCELERATING QUARTERLY EARNINGS AND SALES PER SHARE.” I’d like to ask a question, (if you failed the cat one you’re a sure goner on this one J) Dell Computer, Cisco Systems, America Online, Google, and Apple, what do they all have in common?

Serving the Community through Photography

Did you know that through photography you can serve your community, earn some volunteer hours, and have some photographic experience?

My dad has been a police officer in Raleigh, North Carolina for about 14 years. Recently, he has began working with the community in handling complaints from citizens and businesses, checking the sound meter in clubs, and doing other odd community jobs. Every month his district publishes a newsletter honoring officers and pointing out some great businesses. My dad asked if I could take some pictures of the featured business. This club had recently revised their building to make it more sound proof. Taking these pictures, gave me the opportunity to receive some business as well as get more experience through doing something

I read The Hobbit at age eight. Next I tackled The Lord of the Rings at age twelve. I’m proud to say that I only watch the special extended editions of all three excellent movies. I think it’s safe to say that I love The Lord of the Rings almost as much as I love board games. Which explains why, when I first heard of a Lord of the Rings-themed board game

Meet Mrs. Fred! - Teacher Spotlight

Are any of you out there addicted to grammar, composition, and everything else that you get when you take a TPS English class? Meet Mrs. Ruth Ann Frederick [and not just “Ruth”—people are always stealing the “Ann”!], who’s “addicted to teaching English” with her passion in the grammar & composition. And as an added bonus, if you take one of her classes and go on to become a famous author, she might buy your books! She says that she has “a dream that one day, [her] shelves will be full of books written by [her] former students and autographed. Writing provides a permanent record of thoughts, actions, feelings, etc. [She] would so love to see [her] students live on, long after they have graduated to glory, through the books they write.”
You Do the Hokey Pokey, and You Turn Your iPod On

First came the Wii, a gaming platform which allowed players to control the game by simply waving around a controller whose movements were detected by a control box. Next came the Kinect, which eliminated the need for a controller, instead detecting the players’ own movements. Now, scientists are trying to bring motion-capture technology beyond the world of game and movies, and into the realm of everyday technology.

If motion-capture technology ever becomes standard, it could mean never using a touchscreen, a mouse, or a keyboard. Instead, devices would detect the movements of users, changing the screen at the wave of a hand or turning on at the snap of a finger. Some even envision a network of sensors set up across the country. Tablets connect to the surrounding
